My Kirituhi Tattoo

steves_kirituhi_tattoo_by_tamokofightwear1On Saturday 1st August, for my birthday, I went to see Tony from Kirituhi Tattoo based in Ilkeston, near Nottingham. I had the appointment booked for about 3 months, and was very excited about.

Loo and I left Wycombe at 8am to get there for a 10am. I was booked in for 6 hours but was prepared for it to take longer, you can’t rush these things. We arrived just after 10 due to the rain, and after some introductions got started.

The first couple of hours was spent designing the tattoo freehand on my arm. I soon realised that this really was the only way a sleeve can be done, as Tony could follow the curves of my arm perfectly, to create a very special and unique design.

Once the main lines had be drawn and tidied up we started with the inking. It took about 4 hours including a few breaks. Tony then drew in the patterns and started inking those. It was hard work at times, I forgot how sensitive parts of your wrist can be. We finished just after 6pm and had a final cup of tea to steady my nerves. Being tattoo’d for 6 hours isn’t easy, but I just wanted it finished, I didn’t want to come back another time.

Tony had an assistant named Richard who is an amazing illustrator. He is learning to tattoo, so stuck around most of the day making cups of tea or coffee, and even made Tony some toast! You can see some of his work on his blog: http://ume-toys.blogspot.com/ and follow him on Twitter http://twitter.com/umetoys. The banter between Tony and Richard kept me entertained all day.

We worked to the sound track provided by a Canadian radio station streamed over the internet, London FM96. The music was alternative rock, and there wasn’t any bad music at all. You can check it out here: http://www.fm96.com/

I am very very happy with my new tattoo, it is my first free hand tattoo, and I am so glad I trusted my instincts and got Tony to do it for me. You can see the photos of it being done here: http://www.dooza.tv/photos/my-kirituhi-tattoo-being-done-by-tony. Loo took most of these photos, and Richard took some too, including the under arm shots.

Tony made me feel very welcome as his studio is in his house. This may sound strange to some, but since its fully licenced and professionally kitted out, its actually nicer than being in a shop. His family and friends were dropping in and out during the day, and I felt like I really got to know him. We didn’t have random people interupting us whilst working, I actually preferred this to a normal tattoo shop.

If you want a custom designed and well tattoo’d Maori inspired Kirituhi design, please speak to Tony and see what he can do for you, I honestly think you can’t go wrong with Tony.

Glade Festival 2009 Review and Photos

Glade has found a great new home at Matterly Bowl, Winchester. Whilst it felt smaller, it worked really well. You could probably fit another 2 or 3 thousand people in comfortably.

We have a very smooth setup, and apart from a few technical glitches during live acts, everything went smoothly, and everyone had a great time.

I ran out of memory in my camera, and couldn’t be bothered to delete photos, so didn’t take anywhere near as many photos as I have done in the past. Here is a gallery page http://www.dooza.tv/photos/glade-festival-2009

The 2 hours of caberet in the Interstalla Circus Tent was simply amazing. Its amazing what people can do with practice. The aerial stuff was breathtaking, I have never been so close to this before.

My highlight was The Correspondents, a combination of MC and DJ, playing a fusion of 30′s swing and 00′s big beat and drum and bass. I first saw them at the Till The Cows Come Home 2008, and as soon as I got home I downloaded the EP. Check out there MySpace page, it has clips, you really need to, its like nothing you have heard or seen before. http://www.myspace.com/thecorrespondentsmusic

Mr Bruce, the MC in the Correspondents, was really professional, and really nice. He came to me early on in the night to give me his radio mic receiver. Just before he was due on we did a sound check and then he got on and did his stuff. Top marks and massive respect to him and Mr Chuckles the DJ.

Another favourite act of mine was the Pantaloonies. A duo hula hoop act which was really amusing as well as technically brilliant. Check out there website for more info: http://tillytwist.co.uk/

So all in all another brilliant festival, packed full of happy festival people all having a good time. I honestly can’t wait for next year to arrive!

Glade 2009 is nearly upon us

With less than a week away until Glade 2009, I am busy getting everything in order. We have a plan, no doubt the plan will change when we get onsite, but thats how these things go.

This year we (Fushion Sound System + Dooza Lighting + Subsonic + IADWM) will be jointly doing the lighting on the Origin Stage, and the sound and light in the Interstella Circus tent.

I will be working with Adam from Subsonic on the lighting in the circus tent. Its going to be a traditional stage show, rather than a full on rave show. This will make a nice change, but I will still miss Sancho Panza (who will be DJing in the crew bar at some point over the weekend). There will be bands playing in there as well as the world tallest DJ. There will be caberet and all sorts of other stuff going on, so if you fancy something slightly different whilst at he festival pop along, grab a beer from the bar (which is also in the circus tent) and relax, its sure to be a good show.

The circus tent runs from approx. midday till 5am Friday and Saturday, and finishes at midnight on Sunday with the rest of the festival.

Andy from IADWM will be in charge of the Origin Stage, providing a full on lightshow that will knock your socks off. I have seen his programming of the strobes, its gonna be awesome!

Its going to be hard work, but lots of fun. I will upload some photos when I get back.
